The Alden Rowing Shells brand is one of the most popular sliding-seat rowing brands on the market. Most of the designs were conceived by Arthur Martin who has received his technical education at the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture. Durham Boat Company is a dealer of the following Alden recreational boats:

• Alden Ocean Shell Single (Alden 16') and Alden Ultra-Lite Double (Alden 18'): Both boats are stable entry level recreational rowing shells. Both boats feature the Oarmaster II drop-in unit. The double was redesigned in 2005 to result in overall hull weight reduction of about 15%.

• Alden Hybrid Quest 16" and Alden Carbon Quest: This touring shell is a hybird of the popular Alden 16' and Alden Star. It comes in two hull constructions and in four colors: white, smoke white, yellow, blue and and green. We offer an enhanced package that provides more comfortable single action carbon seat and a carbon foot stretcher with rowing shoes.

• Row Wing Canoe Conversion Drop-In Unit: Similar to the Oarmaster II, but specifically designed for Canoes. It is an easy way to convert a canoe to a sliding seat rowing shell.

Our latest addition to our recreational product offering is the innovative Echo line of recreational rowing shells. This line has common roots with the Alden in that the designer of the Echo line is Arthur Martin's son Doug Martin. The Echo and Islander are fast becoming some of the most popular recreational shells on the market today. They are especially designed to meet the challenges of open water rowing but are also fun in flat water. The boats not only are designed in Maine, but manufactured there as well.

New for 2007 is the Echo ACE. This boat has the folding riggers and is 24 feet long. It is designed for maximium speed in open water conditions with a wave piercing bow, with letter room to catch water from waves. The hull and deck cross sections of the low long bow are shaped to move up and down through the water with little resistance, allowing the ACE to pick energy and speed from following seas and wakes.
