History of the FISA Design: The FISA hull was developed at the request of FISA, the international governing body for the sport of rowing. Initially hull shapes for 1x, 2x/2- and 4x/4- were designed for open women and lightweights. The head of the FISA Materials Commission, a naval Architect with 25 years hydrodynamic experience, with many successful international designs was charged with the task. In 1987, the first FISA hull was rowed to a World Championship gold medal. Since then many successful crews have chosen to use the FISA hull and it has become the de facto standard at the World Championships.

These designs were made available to any boat builder in the World by FISA. Although the idea to have a mandate such a design was abandoned by FISA, many boat builder used the designs. Durham Boat Company started offering the FISA designed singles in the early 1990's and upgraded the manufacturing methods and rigging components several times.

In 2008, Durham Boat Company decided to reintroduce the FISA Single in carbon constructions. All of the boats are equipped with Dreher carbon seats, Dreher foot stretchers and a Dreher carbon wing rigger. The hulls are made in Canada and outfitted with Dreher carbon rigging components made in the USA. We make these same parts and sell them to premium boat builders throughout the world and offer you the same rowing experience that you would see from some of the most expensive boats in the World, but with at an affordable price. The boats are still available in bright White with black trim as the original Ultra-Shell FISA that we sold. The 2008 FISA carbon single is made with the stiffer and lighter vacuum resin infused process with a UV and scuff resistant gel-coat sprayed in the mold. This process both keeps the weight and cost down. The FISA singles come with red rowing shoes with black trim as standard. The choice of the trim stripe color on the wing is red or white.

The FISA 1x may also be purchased with are top mounted carbon tubular rigger, MK-1 Magik scull locks, New Wave rowing shoes, a standard carbon shoe plate and/or with a New Wave carbon foot plate with NW fixing disks as upgrade options.
