    Durham Boat Club Fall Rowing News 2007

    2007 HOCR Resulsts: Deaglan McEachern and Francis Cuddy came in third this year in the Championship 2xs race in a time of 16:54.599 behind Sam Sitt and Sloan Duross and a crew from Western Rowing Club. The Youth Men's 2x of Vaughan Coder and Andrew Safir race to a 5th place finish in a time of 18:44.016 behind the winners from Malvern Prep and three other boats. The Youth Women's 2x of Stephanie Dreher and Emily Boucher finished in 12th place. Congratulations to all.

    Emily Boucher raced in the under 19 year old women's singles race at the Green Mountain Head in Putney, VT on September 30th. She rowed to a competitive 2nd place finish in a time of 23:47.3. She placed ahead of three other junior scullers by wide margin.

    Emily's next race with be with her partner Stephanie Dreher in the Head-of-the-Charles on Sunday October 21st. Others competing at the HOCR from Durham Boat Club include Vaughan Coder (str.) and Andrew Safir (bow). They also competing in the the High School 2xs Event, but in the Men's Division. In the Championship doubles race, Deaglan McEachern (str.) and Francis Cuddy (bow). This will be Deaglan's third year in the race and Francis' 2nd year.

    Stephanie Dreher (str.) and Emily Boucher (bow) teamed up to win Juniors Women's Doubles (2xs) race at the Meredith Bay Regatta on 9/22/07. Their time was 17:37.28. Both Stephanie and Emily are Seniors in High School. They will be competing later in the Fall in the Head of the Charles (HOCR) in the High School Women's 2x's race there.

    David Lombardi, 8th grader, picked up two medals at Meredith Bay with a first place in the Jr. C Rec 1xs race and a 3rd place in the Men's Rec 1xs race. In the Jr. race he started last and passed all the boats ahead of him. In the Men's race, he started first and held off all the boats behind him and did not get passed.

    Sophomores Erik Schmidt (str.) and Ian Dreher (bow) also rowed to a 3rd place finish at the Meredith Bay Regatta in the Jr. Men's 2xs race. See below to see Erik and Ian racing and in a group picture with their teammates.

    Durham Boat Club Spring and Summer News 2007

    Francis Cuddy and Deaglan McEachern won the Elite National Championship in the Open Men's Double Event in a time of 6:29.93. They also teamed up with Warren Anderson and Jamie Schroeder to win the Elite Men's Quad National Championship in a time of 5:49.23. Congratulations to them all.

    Francis and Deaglan raced on June 1-3 in the NSR-3 to a third place finish behind two other PTC doubles. They were third after their time trial and won their A/B semi-final. The event was one by Matt Hughes and Sam Stitt and they did qualify for the World Rowing Championships to race in the Open Men's Double event.

    Francis and Deaglan won the Pan Am trials at Mercer County (May 21 - May 24). They competed in both the Open Men's 2x and 4x and raced to 3rd place finishes in both event behind Cuba and Argentina at the Pan Am Games the week of July 16th.

    Durham Boat Club members: Deaglan McEachern and Francis Cuddy were selected to the United States Sculling squad that are competing at the Elite World Rowing Championships August 29 through September 2. Deaglan is rowing in the 2 seat of the 4x along with with Mark Flickinger (str.), Jamie Schroeder (3) and Sloan Duross (bow). Francis was a spare this year. So far the 4x has had one of the most exciting races in the rep to sprint from 4th to 2nd place in the last 20 strokes to gain a qualfying position in the A/B semi finals. After failing to qualify for the A Finals, they had a strong race in the B finals and qualified the USA for the Olympics in a third place finish in the B finals. Congratulations to Deaglan and his 4x-mates.

    Durham Boat Club's Juniors Vaughan Coder (stroke) and Andrew Safir (bow) competed at the Canadian Henley in the Junior Men's Double. Their event has 9 heats with 2 to qualify from each heat to the semi-finals and they did make it to the semi-finals. Earlier in the summer they were able to take pieces against Deaglan, Francis and Warren Anderson.

    Durham Boat Club News 2006

    Durham Boat Club Entries in the 2006 HOCR:

    Francis Cuddy and Deaglan McEachern competed at the 2006 HOCR and came in 2nd in the Championship 2xs race lossing to Duross and Stitt by 0.1 sec. Deaglan trained with us for two summers before going to the PTC to train. Francis competed in the Men's 2x at the 2006 World Rowing Championships. Both Deaglan and Francis are from NH and were able to train with us the fall of 2006.

    Max Fowle and Tim Wong raced to an impressive 2nd place finish in the < 23 Youth Men's 2x double event on Sunday. After starting 13th they were able to pass quite a number of boats during their race. Tim and Max had not raced together since early August and have been training at different locations.

    Results from 2006 USRowing National Championships (July 22-23):

    DBC captures four National Championship medals: Three gold and one silver.

    Tim Wong captured the Elite Light Weight Men's Single Championship in a time of 7:21.35. 2nd place went to Olson of MN Rowing Club in a time of 7:23.05, 3rd place went to Lambert U of Central Florida in a time 7:23.32, 4th place to went to Meenk of Olympia Area Rowing Asociation in a time of 7:23.81 and were followed by Borkerman of Lincoln Park BC (7:25.06), Bradford of URI Crew (7:40.45), and Macris of Stonington.

    Max Fowle, Tim's doubles partner, also won the Intermediate Light Weight Men's Singles Championship. His winning time was was 7:20.53. Lacava of Saugatuck was 2nd in a time of 7:21.16, Bradford of URI Crew was 3rd in a time of 7:23.99 and Olson of MN Boat Club was 4th in a time of 7:27.71 and were followed by Lambert of U of Central Florida (7:30.92) and MacManus of Malta.

    Max and Tim teamed up to win the Int. Lt. Wt. Men's Doubles event in a time of 6:48.42. They were followed by Lincoln Park BC 2nd (6:56.64), GMS Rowing Center 3rd (7:01.98), SE Jr. Boat 4th (7:06.63) and Malta BC last.

    Ellis Evans-Brown also gained a silver medal in the Open Men's Senior Single.

    Results from 2006 NE Middle School Sculling Championships (August 5):

    Durham Boat Club juniors captures 3 NE Middle School sculling medals: Two gold and one silver.

    See above from left to right: Joe Arcieri (3), Ian Dreher (bow), Rob Bennett (2) and Erik Schmidt (str.) captured the Northeast Middle School Quad Championship over 4xs from Saratoga and Niskayuna in a hard fought race. The racing was conducted on the Mohawk River in Niskuyuna, NY. Durham shot out at the start and held off some moves in the first thousand and finally took command in the last 500 meters and went on to win by about 14 sec. For all the guys in the DBC quad this was their first race.

    Rob Bennett (str.) and Ian Dreher (bow) won the boys flyweight (<100 lb.) double easily over a crew from Saratoga and Niskayuna. The DBC crew lead from wire to wire.

    Erik Schmidt (str.) and Joe Arcieri (bow) were leading the boys novice doubles race in a close race with Saratoga, when their port stroke oarlock broke with about 20 to 30 meters to go and their scull on that side flew out of the boat. The crew recovered to complete the race under the power of the bowman, with the stroke helping to balance the boat. Thier quick thinking allowed them to stay ahead of other three boats in the race to still capture the silver medal.

    Results from 2006 Canadian Henley (August 7-13):

    Ellis Evans-Brown (bow) and Jon Greer (str.) advanced to the final of Open Men's Doubles event by winning their heat. Then the DBC 2x raced to a close 2nd place finish against NYAC and only missing the Gold Medal by 0.56 second. Both top two boats were open water ahead of the the rest of the field that consisted of Ridley Grad BC, U. of Victoria, a 2nd boat from NYAC followed by Peterborough.

    Max Fowle (bow) and Tim Wong (str.) advanced to the final of Lt. Wt. Men's Sr. B Doubles event by winning their heat. In the final they also came in 2nd. The DBC double was beaten by Kingston RC by just under 3 seconds. The DBC boat was followed by Don RC, North Star RC, U. BC and Calgery RC.

    Congratulation to Hannah Brewster, who won the Senior B Women's Singles race! Although she does not row for Durham BC now, she did learn how to scull here, while rowing with our Junior Team on the Lamprey River.
